If you read only 15 minutes a day, you read 13 books a year

It’s easy to keep on reading.

You can read 13 books in a year if you read just 15 minutes a day.
It surprises me when I talk to people about the number of books they’ve read in their lifetime and they respond with a small number, excusing the same with their inability to read for long periods of time. By the age of 25, it’s easy to have read about 160 books if you start reading at 13. Let’s let the (round) numbers do the talking:

Reading speed assumed to be 300 wpm.
15 minutes = 4500 words
1 line = 12 words
1 page = 35 lines
1 page = 420 words
4500 words = 11 pages
1 book = 300 pages
1 book = 28 days
365 days = 13 books

  • Let your calendar help: If you’re trying to build a reading habit and can’t come around to doing it, try letting the Goals feature of Google Calendar take over. This handy feature will find 15 minutes for you every day.
  • Keep a record: Who doesn’t want to look at this long list of their accomplishments for easy reference for bragging rights? Try goodreads.com to keep a track of all the books you’ve read or want-to-read! There’s even a reading challenge for you to set your goals and look at your progress through the year. What more? You get book recommendations according to what you’ve liked, read people’s reviews of books to choose your next one.
  • Store the knowledge: To ensure you don’t forget what you’ve read in each book, make it a point to write a 100 word summary/review of the same. It’s something I have started very recently and it’s working well! Again, goodreads.com recommended! Here is my little set of reviews.

Reading is love.
